Calculate IPL Run Rate without Treating Overs as Decimals
Convert overs notation into valid balls before calculating a run rate. Current run rate describes scoring so far; required run rate describes the remaining chase.
Convert the overs field
An entry of 12.3 overs means twelve complete overs and three valid balls, or 75 valid balls. Divide by six to express that as 12.5 overs for arithmetic. Do not divide runs directly by 12.3; the notation after the dot is a ball count.

MCC Law 17 defines six valid balls per over. Wides and no-balls do not count among those six. The number of physical deliveries can therefore be greater than the valid-ball count used in the calculation.
Calculate the current rate
For a hypothetical score of 100 after 12.3 overs, the current rate is 100 ÷ 12.5, which equals 8 runs per over. An equivalent formula is runs multiplied by six, divided by valid balls: 100 × 6 ÷ 75.
This rate describes the scoring already completed. It is not a prediction of the final total. A side can score faster or slower later, lose wickets or have its innings interrupted.
Calculate the required rate
Use the runs still needed to reach the current target and the valid balls remaining under the current innings limit. If 60 runs are needed from 30 valid balls, five overs remain, so the required rate is 12 runs per over.
In an ordinary unrevised chase, calculate the runs needed from the target, not from the first innings score alone. If the first side scored 170, a target of 171 requires 51 more runs when the chase is at 120.
Use the same match context
The target, score and available overs must refer to the same stage. After an interruption, the official target and innings limit can change. Do not combine a revised target with an old ball count copied from a screenshot.
For an example, 24 runs from 12 balls is 12 per over. If a wide adds one run without using a valid ball, the requirement becomes 23 from 12; update the two counters separately. These numbers illustrate the method and are not a current fixture.
Know the limits of the rate
A rate does not include every factor affecting the match. Wickets remaining, batting resources, conditions and the next deliveries matter. It also cannot be substituted for fantasy points, which use a separate contest's scoring rules.
When a display seems inconsistent, check the innings, status and update time before concluding the arithmetic is wrong. At the end of a completed chase, a remaining-ball calculation no longer represents an unfinished scoring task.
Know when to stop
The calculation is ready when you have converted valid balls correctly and matched the score, target and limit to the same match state. Use rates as descriptions of progress, not guarantees of a result.
